The Lateran Treaty
The quarrel between the Pope and the Italian State had been the most significant problem in Italy’s politics since 1870. “The problems involved were called the Roman Question” (Fact monster). Being well aware of how much a good relationship with Pope meant for the nation, Mussolini reached the Lateran Treaty with Pope Pius XI in 1929.
According to the agreement, Mussolini asked the Pope to acknowledge the Kingdom of Italy and also to “give up his claim to the lost territories” both in and around Rome (Textbook 75). In return, the Church was compensated for the property seized and became the ruler of Vatican City, which was recognized as an independent area. Besides these, the Lateran Treaty stated that “Roman Catholicism is the only state religion of Italy” as well (Fact monster).
Mussolini’s desire reached at last since his popularity rapidly increased. The Lateran Treaty was a success for Mussolini, which strengthened his position.
