After the First World War, Italians were not satisfied with the territory that they held and as well as the democratic system of government. Workers were organizing to make their conditions better in the industrial regions (north), while farmers in the agricultural religions (south) were trying to launch rebellion against landowners. The dissatisfaction amongst the people led to the general atmosphere of unrest and instability in Italy. That period was considered as a “vacuum” since “no organized opposition to the democratic state” existed (Workbook 49). Benito Mussolini, who became the dictator of Italy, then reached the gap and surprisingly reversed the situation because he gratified people’s willing to control the masses and “eliminate the growing socialist movement” (Workbook 49). This was the beginning of fascism in Italy.
