Fascism
As a Latin term, Fascis means “a bundle of rods, firmly tied together, with a beheading axe protruding from the centre” with a symbol of “absolute authority of the state in ancient Rome” (Workbook 48).
Fascism is a political ideology and “mass movement that arose during time” between the two great wars (Kings Education). Mussolini chose Fascism to replace democracy as the best solution he thought for Italy after the First World War.
The key ideas and beliefs of Fascism are as follows:
* Extreme Nationalism – Fascism has a belief in nationalism on its superlative level. Mussolini was desired to reinstate Italy to the nation with its “former glories under the ancient Romans” (Textbook 73). It was the general feeling among people that the superiority and the greatness of the nation are required to be proved.
* War of Conquest – Mussolini and other fascists believe that “an imperialist war of conquest” is the only way and the final goal for a nation to prove its greatness (Workbook 48). Therefore, military strength was something that Mussolini extremely emphasized on the development of Italy.
* Dictatorship – Democracy is considered too weak to provide the nation’s demand for essential leadership.
* Action over Thought – pragmatism
* Economic Self-sufficiency
* Citizens ought to serve the state
* Anti-communist
